How Asian Handicap Bets Work

It’s probably easier to work out which bookies with Asian Handicap betting to use than it is to work out how this type of bet actually works! We’ll give it our best shot at explaining below:

Asian Handicap betting works by taking the competitors in a match and by using a careful analysis of the relative strengths and weaknesses of each side and how ‘strong’ one side is compared to their opponent, the bookmaker comes up with a ‘handicap’ which when applied, gives the punter a roughly 50/50 choice between the teams.

In football matches for example, Asian Handicap’s are most frequently offered with half a goal. This simple fact means that the drawn result is impossible and so the player only has a choice of two 50/50 bets.

The handicap is then applied to the final result of the game by adding the handicap of the team you backed to the goals they scored and seeing how this affects the result of the game. If the result you still backed is still correct once the handicap has been applied, you win the bet.

Example Bet

For example, a typical Asian Handicap betting option for a football game would see the following options:

Manchester United (-1.5) 10/11 v Arsenal (+1.5) 10/11

If you then backed Manchester United to win the game with a £10 bet and the match finished 2-0 to Manchester United. Once you have applied the handicap of -1.5 goals. That would give a result of Manchester United 0.5 Arsenal 0. Therefore your bet would win.

However, if Manchester United won the game 2-1, then when you apply the handicap, the result of the game changes to Manchester United 0.5 Arsenal 1. This means that when the handicap is applied, Arsenal win the game and your bet on Manchester United winning would lose.

If however, you backed Arsenal to win at a handicap of +1.5 and Manchester United won the game 2-1. When the Arsenal handicap is applied, that gives a score of Manchester United 2 Arsenal 2.5 and this means that even though Arsenal lost, your bet on Arsenal winning won thanks to the handicap.

The important thing to remember with any Asian Handicap bet is that you only apply the handicap of the team you have backed, not both the handicaps shown for the fixture.

Rules & Permutations

Asian Handicap Soccer Betting

Occasionally, although it is very rare, bookmakers may offer two way handicaps on selected matches. For example, if the match was Chelsea v Liverpool, if the bookmaker cannot decide which handicap point is best, they may offer the following bet:

Handicap: Chelsea -0.5, -1 v Liverpool +0.5, +1

In this example, if you bet on Liverpool to win, then your stake is split equally between both handicap options (+0.5 and +1) and your bet is treated essentially as two bets.

This does mean that sometimes you can place a bet and achieve a draw. In which case the bookmaker will return that portion of your stake to you as a push.

So in the example above, if you backed Liverpool to win with a £10 bet. £5 would be placed on Liverpool with a 0.5 handicap, with £5 placed on Liverpool with a +1 handicap.

If the result of the match was an Arsenal win by a 2-1 scoreline. Your +0.5 handicap bet would lose, however, your +1 handicap bet on Liverpool would result in a 2-2 scoreline, a draw and as such, you would see £5 of your initial £10 stake returned to you.

However, if the match finished in a 1-1 draw, then your 0.5 Handicap bet would win and so would your +1 handicap bet. And you would be paid out at the stated odds (usually around even money).

Most bookmakers with Asian Handicap betting on football tend not to over-complicate things as the UK market is not altogether familiar with this form of betting, so it is only on rare occasions that you may find quarter goal or two-way handicaps on offer at any site.
